Some people (especially kids) just love puzzles – especially word or number puzzles. But how many word or number puzzles are made out of wood? Somehow wood and puzzles go together but it’s rare to find a gift where they are combined. Maybe that’s part of the attraction of the game Scrabble. It’s word-puzzle-based and the little letter pieces are all made of wood. I’m sure the Scrabble folks could save a lot of money by making these pieces from plastic, but then the game play wouldn’t have the wonderful feel of moving around those little pieces of wood.
Japanese puzzles are another example where wood and puzzle are combined. Well, the Encrypta cryptex is the newest example of combining wood and puzzle into a single gift. The cryptex is made entirely of wood and brass and the secret code to access the hidden chamber-key inside can be a word- or number-based puzzle. Many of our customers have come up with elaborate puzzles as hints to the secret code for the cryptex that’s been personalized for a specific recipient.
One father developed a series of picture playing cards to give to his child – with each card being a hint leading his son to the solution for the secret code. Others have come up with very creative series of riddles that are given to the cryptex recipients on a sequential basis. In other cases, once the recipient figures out the puzzle to access the hidden chamber-key, what they find is another word or number puzzle that leads them further along a journey towards their gift.
With the popularity of crossword puzzles, we’ve had customers create a customized puzzle where the recipient needed to complete almost every cell to identify the hidden word for which there was no clue. The possibilities are almost endless to take the cryptex wooden puzzle and thrill any puzzle lover.
